Exploring Gender Inequities: Sunflower Fox and the Chicken Leg’s 70’s Rock Anthem “Naughty Little Girl”

(Minneapolis, MN), May 30, 2023 – The 70’s style, female fronted rock and roll band, Sunflower Fox and the Chicken Leg, has been inspired by the golden age of classic rock and are bringing back the vibes that we’ve all been missing.

Their newest single “Naughty Little Girl.” is a sleazy riff-rocker, that struts forward with down n’ dirty, fleet-fingered guitar solos and Kaity’s wailing vocals singing menacingly vengeful lyrics such as: I’m a naughty Little Girl/Who’s a coming after you/Gonna stab you right straight in the eye/With a knife named Peggy Sue

Back when I first started, when I was young and spry, I was approached by a VERY stereotypical looking (what you’re picturing in your brain is exactly correct) agent type after a gig. I was just a little punk girl in shorts skirts, handcuffs for belts, and getting tattoos in people’s basements. I ABSOLUTELY had no problem standing up for myself and my band never worried about me, but when there was someone who potentially had power over us-who could get us gigs, who could help us pay our bills-I was intimidated (as were they).

“He gestured towards his lap to sit on it. Being as young as I was I looked at my boys, who I remember shrugged as they didn’t know what the hell to do either and this dude wasn’t Santa Claus, so I remember hovering over his knee as a horrifically, hilarious compromise.

He then asked me point blank ‘You’re a naughty little girl aren’t you?’

It became ABUNDANTLY clear to all of us where this was all going. I stood up from my quad burning position, made some dumb ass quip and tried to talk business. This did not go well. He turned on me real quick. Not only because I wouldn’t play ball…but we sucked. Hahahahaha. I’m not gonna mince words: I didn’t know what the hell I was doing as a singer then-neither did anyone else in my band..but I sure as hell wasn’t gonna sign my soul away to “BE A STAR” or whatever the hell he was selling.

Fast forward: turns out my story was one of several from this same person, and mine was soooo tame. And we all know he’s not the only one who’s done it.

So what do I do?! I wrote a song about it. With a bunch of kick ass rocker girls from around Minneapolis including: Randi Friedl, Faith Jalas and Letitia Rae from 80’s metal band Slave Raider. What’s sad is I didn’t even have to ask if they had these experiences. BECAUSE I KNOW EVERY GIRL HAS THESE. I mean good god.

When we were recording; all we could do was laugh as it was story after story after story of audience members, venue owners, buyers, agents just either being dicks or straight up sexually assaulting someone.

But here’s where we’re lucky…and I want to be very clear here: we have some DAMN supportive male band members, friends, husbands, boyfriends. And myself- I could not have picked a more supportive, cooler group of dudes. I know they can say the same.

We’re here to burn all the other nonsense to the ground: and laugh hysterically while we do it.

“The song is about the music industry and how women were treated during that period,” James says. Kaity adds: “In the beginning of the song, you can hear a lot of Minneapolis female rock singers yelling all the creepy things music biz types have said to them over the years. Next, it delves into the dark underbelly of the music industry and the mistreatment of women during that era.  “It’s like a stripper song—if strippers had machetes,Think Mississippi queen…but the grindhouse version.” shares Kaity.

The single art has a pulp 1970’s slasher vibe to it and the burnt orange screams 1974 from the cover.

“Naughty Little Girl” is not just a song, but a girl power anthem that ignites a fiery spirit within that captures the essence of a bygone era where rock ‘n’ roll was raw and untamed, both in behind the scenes and in front of it. Sunflower Fox and the Chicken Leg, with their unapologetic approach and blistering sound, stand as a symbol of resistance against the injustices and prejudices faced by women in the music industry.

Their message is clear: they are here to shake up the old guard and bring about a new era of empowerment and equality.
